The WC are over for Thailand. We had to wait for the last day of the first round to be sure of heading to the last 16 teams. I thougt we would always be placed with this goal difference but finally we needed the help of Solomon Islands who beated Guatemala and therefore cleared our way to the second round.
The countries who normally easily win (all or not with big goal differences), failed to turn up.
The opening game against Costa Rica was very important and the 3-1 win was very deserved. Against Ukraine we had to make up 5-0 arrears, but they didn’t allow us more than 3 goals, end score 5-3 for Ukraine. The last groupstage game again we started not to so good. After 10 minutes it was already 3-0 for Paraguay. It became a shimmering game and finally we lost 3-2.
After the game a lot of people asked me why I didn’t play with the flying goalkeeper. There were 2 reasons: 1. the endscore Costa Rica – Ukraine and 2. we created so many changes with 4 players that I didn’t find it necessary to play powerplay (with the risk of getting more against goals).
But like I mentioned before: I didn’t expect that some other countries wouldn’t reach their normal level in their third game.
From this place again thanks to Solomon Islands who gave me and the Thai supporters a terrific evening!
In the second round we immediately came across vice worldchampion Spain…..In the first half I enjoyed the game very much as a coach; Spains perfect control and Thai opportunism, driven by an ecstatic crowd. It was a pitty that we couldn’t cash it. After a corner for us, Spain scored out of a counter. Also the 2-0 for Spain came out of a set piece. A corner was perfectly cashed by Torres. After half time it were finally the 3-0 and 4-0 which drained our strength.
Thailand can look back on a very good WC and will for sure show good in the future!
