After the first WC Futsal in 1989, I was fully convinced that our sport would become hot!.
Mr. Blatter, at that time Secretary of Mr. Havelange, said that five a side would become the new football sport for the future. Nice words.
After 22 years sounds are getting more negative; the breakthrough is still pending. In my view too many countries think that Futsal is a threat for Football; this is a misconception.
Last June I was asked to give a presentation at the colloquiem of the Belgium Football Federation for more than 350 Football trainers. Subject: “Futsal as surplus value for Football”. One of the most important points was the development of Spanish and Dutch Football (at this moment nrs. 1 & 2 of the world). Both countries used 4 vs 4 > Futsal, in their education with above mentioned result.
And please let’s not forget how our youngest players dream to become part of their favourite football club and finally make the winning goal in, let’s say, the cup final. How to start? Yes ofcourse: playing 4 vs 4.
And how many top players refer to their surplus value by playing Futsal in their younger years?
In Malta, where I also proclaim this for two years, they will start next season to link every Futsalclub to a Footballclub. I’m going to help FC Qormi how they can implement this.
And this December I will travel to Holland to look at the possibilities to do the same with a Dutch Futsal club and a Premier League club.
That’s why I say: if we want to develop further Futsal we must look at the education of Football. Trying to convince clubs and associations to start their education with the 4 vs 4 game.
Something which I proclaimed last month in Austria and will do so next week in Swaziland!
